Description

Apple Crisp is a warm and comforting baked dessert featuring tender, spiced apples topped with a buttery oat crumble. Perfect for autumn or any time you’re craving a classic, homemade sweet treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Apple Mixture

  • 6 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples (about 6 medium)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Topping

  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking and ensure easy serving.
  2. Toss Apples with Spices and Sugar: In a large bowl, combine the peeled, cored, and sliced apples with granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss well to evenly coat the apples.
  3. Spread Apples in Baking Dish: Evenly spread the spiced apple mixture across the bottom of the prepared baking dish, creating a uniform layer.
  4. Prepare the Oat Topping: In a separate bowl, mix together the rolled oats, all-purpose flour, packed brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and salt. Using a pastry cutter or fork, cut in the cold butter cubes until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs and the butter is well distributed.
  5. Apply Topping Over Apples: Sprinkle the oat and butter topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish, covering the entire surface.
  6. Bake the Apple Crisp: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes. The apples should become tender and the topping will turn a golden brown color.
  7. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra indulgent touch.

Notes

  • For added texture and flavor, mix in 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts to the oat topping before baking.
  • To adjust sweetness, substitute some or all of the sugar with maple syrup or honey.
  • This dessert is best served warm but can be reheated gently in the oven or microwave.
