Ingredients
Scale
Apple Mixture
- 6 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples (about 6 medium)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Topping
- 3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking and ensure easy serving.
- Toss Apples with Spices and Sugar: In a large bowl, combine the peeled, cored, and sliced apples with granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss well to evenly coat the apples.
- Spread Apples in Baking Dish: Evenly spread the spiced apple mixture across the bottom of the prepared baking dish, creating a uniform layer.
- Prepare the Oat Topping: In a separate bowl, mix together the rolled oats, all-purpose flour, packed brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and salt. Using a pastry cutter or fork, cut in the cold butter cubes until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs and the butter is well distributed.
- Apply Topping Over Apples: Sprinkle the oat and butter topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish, covering the entire surface.
- Bake the Apple Crisp: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes. The apples should become tender and the topping will turn a golden brown color.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra indulgent touch.
Notes
- For added texture and flavor, mix in 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts to the oat topping before baking.
- To adjust sweetness, substitute some or all of the sugar with maple syrup or honey.
- This dessert is best served warm but can be reheated gently in the oven or microwave.
