Ingredients
Scale
Sausage Gravy
- 1 pound breakfast sausage
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
Casserole
- 1 can (16.3 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough (8 count)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
- Chopped parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Cook Sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until browned and fully cooked, breaking it into crumbles as it cooks to ensure even browning.
- Add Flour: Sprinkle the all-purpose flour evenly over the cooked sausage, stirring well to coat the meat and cook the flour for 1 to 2 minutes to form a roux.
- Make Gravy: Gradually whisk in whole milk, stirring constantly. Season with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and optional crushed red pepper flakes. Continue to cook and simmer for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring frequently until the gravy thickens to the desired consistency. Then remove from heat.
- Assemble Casserole: Cut each biscuit into quarters. Scatter half of these biscuit pieces evenly in the prepared baking dish. Pour the sausage gravy evenly over the biscuits. Then top with the remaining biscuit quarters.
- Add Cheese and Bake: Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top if desired. Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.
- Rest and Garnish: Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow it to set. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired and serve warm.
Notes
- For added flavor, stir a pinch of thyme or sage into the sausage gravy while simmering.
- You can prep the casserole the night before: assemble all components without baking, cover tightly, and refrigerate. Bake in the morning for a fresh breakfast.
- Serve this casserole with eggs or fruit to complete your breakfast or brunch menu.
