Description

This Classic Round Steak & Gravy recipe offers tender, flavorful slices of round steak smothered in a rich onion and mushroom gravy. Featuring versatile cooking methods including Instant Pot, Crock Pot, and oven, this comforting dish is perfect for an easy weeknight dinner or a hearty family meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat

  • 4 to 6 slices of round steak (approximately 2 lbs)

Gravy and Vegetables

  • 2 pouches onion gravy mix
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 1 medium yellow onion, sliced
  • 2 cups diced mushrooms
  • 3 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed
  • 2 tbsp butter, divided

Instructions

  1. Sauté Vegetables: Set the Instant Pot to sauté mode and add 1 tablespoon of butter. Sauté the sliced onions, smashed garlic, and diced mushrooms until the mushrooms are golden brown and tender, releasing their moisture and flavor.
  2. Add Steak and Gravy Mix: Place the seared steak slices on top of the sautéed vegetables in the Instant Pot. In a separate bowl, mix the 2 pouches of onion gravy mix with 2 cups of hot water, stirring to fully dissolve. Pour the gravy mixture evenly over the steak and vegetables.
  3. Cook Under Pressure: Seal the Instant Pot lid and set it to the “Meat” or “High Pressure” cooking mode for 20 minutes to tenderize the steak thoroughly.
  4. Release and Serve: Once the cooking time is complete, carefully release the steam using the quick-release method. Open the lid, stir gently, and serve the steak and gravy hot over your choice of side dishes.
  5. Alternative Crock Pot Method: Combine all ingredients in the slow cooker. Cook on low heat for 8 hours until the meat is fork-tender and flavors meld beautifully.
  6. Alternative Oven Method: Place all ingredients into a covered roasting pan. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 2 to 2.5 hours, or until the meat is tender and the gravy is thickened.

Notes

  • For extra richness, you can add an additional tablespoon of butter before serving.
  • This recipe works well served over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.
  • Adjust cooking times slightly depending on the thickness of your steak slices.
  • The gravy mix can be substituted with homemade onion gravy for a fresher taste.
  • Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheat beautifully.
