Ingredients
Scale
Meat
- 1 lb ground sausage
Vegetables and Fruits
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 2 apples, peeled and chopped
Other Ingredients
- 8 cups cubed bread, toasted
- 2 cups chicken broth
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Prepare Ingredients: Begin by chopping the onion, celery, and peeling and chopping the apples. Toast the bread cubes until they are dry and slightly golden to give the stuffing a nice texture.
- Cook Sausage and Vegetables: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground sausage until browned. Remove excess fat if needed. Add the chopped onion and celery to the skillet and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir occasionally.
- Combine Stuffing Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the toasted bread cubes, cooked sausage and vegetable mixture, chopped apples, poultry seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix everything evenly to distribute the flavors.
- Add Liquids: Pour in the melted butter and chicken broth, tossing the mixture gently until the bread is moistened but not soggy. Adjust salt and pepper to taste.
- Transfer to Crockpot: Lightly grease the inside of your crockpot with butter or cooking spray. Transfer the stuffing mixture into the crockpot, spreading it out evenly.
- Cook: Cover and cook on low heat for 4 to 5 hours, or on high heat for 2 to 3 hours, until the stuffing is cooked through, moist, and the flavors have melded together.
- Serve: Once done, fluff the stuffing gently with a fork and serve warm alongside your favorite main dishes.
Notes
- You can substitute bread cubes with gluten-free bread if needed.
- For a vegetarian version, omit the sausage and use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.
- If you prefer a crispier top, transfer the stuffing to a baking dish and bake uncovered at 350°F (175°C) for 15 minutes before serving.
- Ensure the apples are peeled to prevent extra moisture that could make the stuffing soggy.
- Adjust the seasoning with additional poultry seasoning, salt, or pepper to suit your taste.
