Description

This Grilled Balsamic Flank Steak Caprese combines the rich, smoky flavor of grilled flank steak with a fresh Caprese salad topping of mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, and basil, all enhanced by a tangy balsamic glaze. It’s a perfect dish for a quick yet elegant weeknight dinner or a small gathering, balancing savory and fresh vibrant flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

Marinade

  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Steak

  • 1 1/2 lbs flank steak
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for grilling)

Caprese Toppings

  • 1 cup fresh mozzarella, sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, torn or chopped
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic glaze (for drizzling)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the marinade: In a bowl, whisk together the balsamic vinegar, olive oil, honey or maple syrup, minced garlic, dried oregano, salt, and pepper to create a flavorful marinade.
  2. Marinate the steak: Place the flank steak in a resealable plastic bag or shallow dish and pour the marinade over it, ensuring the steak is well coated. Seal or cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours for deeper flavor infusion.
  3. Preheat the grill: Heat your grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Use olive oil to lightly oil the grill grates or pan surface to prevent sticking.
  4. Grill the steak: Remove the steak from the marinade, letting excess drip off, and grill for 4-6 minutes on each side until desired doneness is reached—130°F for medium-rare or 140°F for medium.
  5. Rest the steak: Take the steak off the grill and let it rest on a cutting board for 5 minutes to allow juices to redistribute.
  6. Assemble Caprese toppings: Arrange the fresh mozzarella slices, halved cherry tomatoes, and torn basil leaves on a serving platter while the steak rests.
  7. Slice and serve: Slice the steak thinly against the grain, then layer the slices over the Caprese arrangement on the platter.
  8. Finish with balsamic glaze: Drizzle the balsamic glaze over the steak and Caprese toppings and serve immediately for a delicious, fresh presentation.

Notes

  • Marinating the steak longer (up to 2 hours) enhances flavor but avoid over-marinating to prevent texture changes.
  • For a smoky flavor, use a charcoal grill or add wood chips to your gas grill.
  • Resting the steak is crucial for juicy slices.
  • Use fresh mozzarella and fresh basil for authentic Caprese flavor.
  • This dish pairs well with a light green salad or crusty bread.
