Ingredients
Scale
For the Pie Filling
- 0.75 cup fresh strawberries, finely diced
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 0.5 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 0.33 cup Nutella hazelnut spread
For the Dough and Assembly
- 2 refrigerated pie crusts, softened
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 tablespoon milk
- Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
- Mix the Strawberry Filling: In a small bowl, combine the finely diced strawberries with granulated sugar, cornstarch, and vanilla extract. Mix well to coat the strawberries, ensuring the filling thickens during baking.
- Cut Pie Crust Circles: On a lightly floured surface, unroll the softened pie crusts. Using a 4-inch round cutter, cut out circles from the dough, aiming to get as many as possible for 8 hand pies.
- Assemble the Hand Pies: Place half of the dough circles onto the prepared baking sheet. Spoon about one tablespoon of Nutella onto the center of each dough circle, then top with a tablespoon of the strawberry mixture.
- Seal the Pies: Top each filled circle with another dough circle. Press the edges together firmly with a fork to seal the pies completely, preventing leaks during baking.
- Brush with Egg Wash and Vent: In a small bowl, whisk together the beaten egg and milk to create an egg wash. Brush this mixture over the tops of each hand pie to help them brown beautifully. Cut a small slit in the top of each pie to allow steam to escape while baking.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake the pies for 18 to 22 minutes, or until the crusts turn golden brown and crisp.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the pies from the oven and let them cool slightly. If desired, dust with powdered sugar before serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature for a delicious treat.
Notes
- Do not overfill the pies to prevent the filling from leaking out during baking.
- These hand pies are delicious when served warm or at room temperature, making them perfect for parties or dessert on the go.
- Use fresh strawberries for the best flavor and texture in the filling.
- Ensure pie crusts are softened slightly to make cutting and folding easier.
